The 1860 Federal Census does not include the names of inmates at the State Asylum for the Insane.

The enumerator gives us the following explanation:
"Dr. T. F. Greene Physician etc. of the Asylum refuses to give more than the initial letters of the names of the patients as it is contrary to Rules of the Institution."

Each inmate is simply labeled by his or her initials with their marital status replacing a surname, ie. J.J. Single, J. M. Married.
