POURNELL. On the 1860 Census, Chatham Co.,
GA, John Pournell states he was born in Baldwin Co., GA, his age given
is 60. On the 1850 Census, Washington Co., GA his age given is 54
(b. 1796). Parents of John and 2 brothers, Geo. Wash. (b. 1801) Wm.
(b. 1803) both born Long Island, NY are John Pournelle b. ca. 1875 and
Serbra Unknown. John Serbra lived in Savannah ca. 1806 (John is on
Chatham Co. Tax Digest 1806). John died War of 1812 and Serbra removed
to Washington Co., GA where she is listed on 1820 Census. This family
is the only ones in US who spell their name "Pournell/e". The most
frequently used spelling is Purnell. Is there anyone else researching
Purnells from Baldwin Co., GA? Are there any surviving tax digest
1797-1800 where I might document that John was in Baldwin Co. Since Baldwin
Co. and Washington Co. touch, could John have been born in what was Wash.
Co. in 1797? A Col. Joseph Pannell won land in Rev. Soldier's Receipt for
Georgia Bounty Grant - Could Joseph be the father of the older John Pournelle?
Are any Deed Records published for Baldwin Co. this time period.
Thanks
