Graves Registration Service File Search

In 1917 a Graves Registration Service was authorized by War Department General Order 104. Although individual combat units were responsible for burying their dead as soon as possible (usually within 24 hours), the GRS was charged with disinterring the bodies for reburial in military cemeteries in Europe or to be shipped back to the United States for burial there. Following the war, the Quartermaster General asked each family if the wished the bodies interred in an American military cemetery in Europe or returned to America for burial in a National Cemetery, non-military cemetery or in a family plot.
A Graves Registration File was created for each soldier who died overseas. If the soldier's mother or widow took the Gold Star Mothers' Pilgrimage, the record of that pilgrimage is also included in the Graves Registration File.
