The Spanish American War was fought for four months in 1898 between the United States and Spain. The main catalyst being the Cuban fight for independence from Spain. The war was fought in the Pacific and the Caribbean. Hostilities ended on 12 August 1898 with the formal peace treaty being signed in Paris, France, on 10 December 1898. The Treaty of Paris gave the Spanish colonies of Guam, Puerto Rico and the Philippines to the United States and effectively ended the Spanish Empire. It also granted Cuba her independence, but it was not until 1902 that Cuba became self-governing.
